The mature oak tree in our front yard, right in front of our home (first picture) had unusual growths on it.
With some fear that it would disastrously collapse on our home some day, we consulted our favorite arborists, Savatree--who are not quick to cut down any tree--and they sadly agreed that the tree should be removed. A few days later, they removed the tree (second picture).
After the tree was removed, we could see that, in addition to the disease causing the growths, the trunk had also become hollow in the core (third picture).
What do you do with the tree stump grindings that are left behind? We now have a cubic yard or two of stump grindings. I am saving some to mix into our compost. The rest I am spreading as playground mulch in the Walled Garden. It's soft under bare feet and now I don't have to buy and spread the cedar mulch I usually put down.
The question now is: what do I plant in the place of the old oak tree? It's now full-sun of course and it is right outside of the large picture window where I like to sit and read or knit or have a cup of tea. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry for your loss, and that I don't have a solution for the yard. We should have the maple tree in our front yard looked at. It has something eating it, and leaving bits of the shaved wood on the flowers below. I never thought about the possibility of it falling. I hope you figure something out and post updates.

Yes, I'd recommend that you have someone look at it. We had what we thought was a very healthy, mature tree unexpectedly fall in the backyard, but fortunately it didn't hit the house or anyone. As a result of that, we're now a little paranoid.

It is so very sad to lose a tree. You obviously did the correct thing by having it removed, but I'm sure it is missed.
A terrible loss...that was an venerable and old tree! But having limbs fall on your house would not be good! If I may be so bold....I think you ought to plant a tree to the left (as your looking at the house)...That beautiful oak...dissected your house into two where it was growing. I love how open and inviting your front porch looks from the street. A beautifully shaped tree...dogwood, japanese maple, even Oaks...red oak, pin oak, willow oak...are fast growing shade trees. It's rather sad when we have to cut some of our trees. We had to cut a huge maple this year, I hated to do it, but there were problems. I miss it everyday. The entire yard & house all look different now.
